Week 1-5

Away from the lights and buildings of Manhattan, Brooklyn feels more like home. It’s comforting to see the sunset and know that in the skyline my city is waiting for me to come back home. Colors were taken from colors of the sunset and then a candid photo of myself walking to my friends’ apartment a few blocks away from where the picture was taken.

I was exhausted, just gotten off a nine hour shift, and then a twelve hour the night before with very little sleep between with homework and regular stress of life. I had a mix of emotions going through me, wanting to get home, it was too hot and I was wearing a leather shirt, bad idea.

Even when we hate how we look and our situations and the world around us in the moment, it can really take your breath away to stop and look around me. I’m so thankful my friend took this photo as to show me what I was stomping away from around me, a beautiful color pallet among other things.

My retrospective has changed from the original with words, and overall feel. I’ve changed the tone to match the rest of the pages and journal pages.

PS1 resides not too far into queens and it’s a few stops away on the G train from where I sleep half the week. Having gone to the summer concerts at PS1 and seeing many exhibits from my friend who interned with the museum, I knew I was going to be inspired by the museum. But it wasn’t until I was left the museum that I found the best inspiration that I had never really looked at. The intricate system of flags, cords, and wires that make up the installation above the courtyard, really jumped out to me. I used modern silhouettes I found in people watching in the museum, and then pushed them with the idea of over lapping cut outs and pleats. I wanted to make designs that would move with the body just like the installation fluttering in the wind.

Brooklyn makes for an amazing place to buy fruits and vegetables. Aside from the freshness and cheap prices, that make any poor college student cry in joy, the market also makes for a great place of inspiration. The colors of the produce and fruits always stick with me hours after the shopping trip.
